‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.’ – John 1:1-3
'God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; ' - Hebrews 1:1-2
You want to know the mind of a person? Listen to his words. The mouth always speaks what is in the heart, always, without fail. A man can pretend in actions, but in his speech, he can only conceal the true picture of who he is for a little while. He will eventually spill his true self out in his speech.
I have seen people with good gait and dress sense only for me to be irritated by the content of their speech. In our relationship with God, we get to know Him by studying His Words to us. We only know His plans for us by listening out for His voice to us. Hebrews 1:1-2 talks about how God spoke and is speaking. In the past, God spoke to the fathers through His prophets (Hebrews 1:1) as seen in the Old Testament. But in this dispensation, Hebrews 1:2 says He has spoken to us through His Son. This means God’s intention for us has been communicated to us through His Son.
Then by logic, if we know a man (the true man is who he is inside, not the part of him he displays outside) by his speech which reveals the content of his heart (Luke 6:45), then it means God is known through His Son. This evidence is seen in John 14:7 where Jesus Christ says whoever has seen Him has seen the Father. Hebrews 1:3 calls Jesus Christ the exact representation of God’s being. Colossians 1:15 describes Him as the Image of the Invisible God. John 1:18 calls Him God.
To know God, we have to come to Christ, who is the exact image of who God is. To know Christ is to know God. But I started this argument with the fact that you know a being by his speech, that is, a man is known by his words. God has spoken to us in these days through His Son. His Son is the Word made flesh (John 1:14), a reflection of Him. Revelation 19:13 reveals Jesus Christ as the Word of God. God is still speaking to us through His Word as Hebrews 1:3 puts it.
To know God is to sit with His Word. God is His Word, just like a man is truly known in his speech, and his speech is him, so is God. John 1:1 says, “The Word was God.”
Now, how do you hear Him speak through His Word? Every man has a spirit at grip in his heart. You see, the battle for the battle is for the soul of man. Christ came and died that we might have life and be free from the grip of sin (Hebrews 1:4). The battle has always been for the mind. The heart determines the product of your life (Proverbs 4:23 MSG). But you see, the heart produces what you feed your mind.
What you constantly behold, you become. What you consistently listen to or read becomes your beliefs and convictions. And what you believe in your heart eventually becomes your truth. This is why we must diligently guard what goes in. No man is empty. There is always a spirit at work in the life of a man, and by their fruits, you will know them (Matthew 7:15-20, NKJV).
Like a man is, God was. As a man’s words are inspired by the content of his heart as worked on by the spirit at work in him, so was the Scripture inspired by His Breath (2 Timothy 3:16), and we know that the breath of the Almighty is a Spirit, His Spirit (John 20:21-22, Job 32:8, Job 33:4, Job 34:14-15). To know the content of His Word, it must be opened to your heart by His Spirit.
The Bible may as well be a book of rules if not understood by the Spirit which inspired it. It is by His Spirit that the intention of God for the text is revealed to you. It is only the spirit of a man that knows the intentions of his heart; likewise, God’s Spirit knows God’s intentions for you (1 Corinthians 2:11), and it is by His Spirit that we can know and understand what is made available to us by Him.
His intentions have been communicated to us through His Word and we can only understand this through the Holy Ghost (1 Corinthians 2:13). A natural man will only see the Scriptures as letters and this does not give life. It is the Spirit, through the Word, that gives life, and Christ (the Word) came that we might have life in abundance (John 10:10). It is the Word that gives life, through the Holy Spirit, that we may produce a God-life here on earth.
